Reliability Society Receives IEEE Education AwardOn November 19, the 2010 IEEE Educational Activities Board Society / Council Professional Development Award was presented to the IEEE Reliability Society (above from left): Dennis Hoffman (president-elect), Dr. Jeffrey Voas (president) and Dr. Sam Keene (VP of Technical Activities): Other attendees of the award ceremony included the IEEE President, members of the IEEE Board of Directors, and other IEEE Officers and companions. Reliability society was established in 1950, becoming the 7th IEEE Society to be formed. Our members recognize the reliability society to be agile and responsive. We have particularly tried to be responsive to IEEE Educational Activities department requests for the past 19 years. The Reliability Society has been among the earliest societies developing educational products in support and cooperation with IEEE Educational Activities area. The society has consistently responded to educational requests and supported the various IEEE educational offerings since its initial tutorial recording in 1992. This was directly followed by participation in: two live satellite tutorial broadcasts:
Then the EA products transitioned to video products. We then developed 10 video tutorials; two of which were developed in conjunction with the Electron Devices Society. That was followed by “Expert Now” educational products where the reliability society produced 8 additional tutorials. RS has been the first “come to” society for EA initiatives, and has ALWAYS been supportive of tutorial development requests. The Reliability Society currently sponsors or co sponsors tutorials and workshops at its Symposia (including. RAMS, IRPS, IWS, ISSRE, SSIRI. Some of these recorded tutorials are currently being considered for their potential use in "Expert Now" modules. Feedback from attendees says they can justify the cost of the symposium based upon the training they receive at the tutorials and workshops. AdCom meetings are held at chapter locations or at their sponsored Symposia locations. Wherever possible, technical seminars are provided to the local IEEE membership. In addition, the RS has initiated a series of student outreach events. These events include technical presentations and workshops and are held at colleges and universities in conjunction with local society chapters and activities. In the last few years, we have averaged two workshops per year. The IEEE Reliability allocates up to five $2000 scholarships annually for students demonstrating outstanding achievement in reliability or related fields. The application process is quite rigorous and involves student discussion of their interest, involvement and accomplishments in the reliability discipline (both academic and professional), transcripts and letters of recommendation. There have been twelve $2000 scholarships awarded since its inception November of 2006. |
